PHILADELPHIA - The 30th-ranked Haverford College men's squash team (0-1) opened its 2024-25 season with a 9-0 loss to seventh-ranked Drexel (1-0) in Pennsylvania State Championships round robin action at the Kline & Specter Squash Center in University City on Friday evening.
At the top flight, team co-captain Noah Tunis fought hard against Drexel's Guido Lindner but was defeated 11-4, 11-2, 11-6. At the second flight, Aaryaman Jaising struggled against Fritiof Jacobsson, falling 11-3, 11-3, 11-4.
On the third rung of the ladder, Kai Schinaman displayed solid effort against Dumitru Goian but ultimately dropped his match to the Dragons player by a 11-6, 11-4, 11-5 final. In the fourth flight, Henry Jiang made his collegiate debut, as the Canadian junior standout pushed Charlie Taylor in the second game but ultimately came up short, losing 11-4, 11-7, 11-2.
At the fifth flight, rookie Tarun Sargunar faced Sean Murphy and was unable to find momentum in his debut, falling 11-2, 11-4, 11-3. Competing in the sixth flight, Qianzhi Zhao managed a strong third-game effort but was defeated 11-1, 11-2, 11-6 by Drexel's Shomari Wiltshire.
In the lower third of the ladder, Garret Fantini (seventh flight) took on Tavneet Singh Mundra but lost 11-1, 11-3, 11-2. In the eighth flight, Francis Betkowski faced Thiago Cabrejos and was overpowered 11-3, 11-1, 11-1. Rounding out the lineup in the ninth flight, Arvin Krishnan battled Hussain Alzaatari but was defeated 11-3, 11-3, 11-4.
The Pennsylvania State Championships, an annual tournament that features all six College Squash Association (CSA) varsity programs in the state, will now continue tomorrow for day two of round robin competition, as the men's squash team will travel to No. 1 Penn at 10 a.m., before battling No. 21 Chatham at the Kline & Specter Squash Center on the campus of Drexel at 2:30 p.m.
