Fords women kick off soccer season with victory

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The 2009 season opened in fine fashion for Haverford's women's soccer team as the Fords broke out to a three-goal lead over visiting Wesley (Del.) College before defeating the Wolverines by a 3-1 score at Walton Field.

Sophomore defender Erin Verrier scored her first collegiate goal to open the scoring for Haverford (1-0) with a shot into the back, right side of the net from 30 yards out in the 14th minute. Teammate Erin Dowling put Haverford ahead by two less than five minutes later, then within the opening minutes of the second half the Fords pushed the score to 3-0 on a goal by Michele Buonora.

A late goal by Sammi Nevin allowed Wesley (0-1) to avoid the shutout.

Dowling added an assist in the game to come away with three-point day while Anna Rayne and Katie Van Aken, the leading scorer on the team in 2008, also picked up assists.

Making her first collegiate start in goal for the Fords, junior Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds finished the day with a pair of saves in recording the win. Sydney Kahan, under pressure all game long from the Fords attack, took the loss for the Wolverines but came away with nine saves.

The Fords head back into action over the weekend when they'll host the Haverford Kickoff Classic welcoming the University of Wis.-Oshkosh and Arcadia as opponents, along with Wilkes (Pa.) who will square off against Oshkosh and Arcadia over the Saturday-Sunday Classic.
