Women's soccer outlasts Red Devils

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Katie Van Aken's late goal spurred the Haverford College women's soccer team to a 2-1 Centennial Conference win over visiting Dickinson College Saturday afternoon.

Played under a mix of rain and downpour, the Haverford (11-2-2, 6-2 CC) victory moves the Fords ahead of Dickinson (12-3-0, 5-3 CC) in the league standings and allows the Scarlet and Black to remain solidly in the hunt for a third consecutive Centennial postseason playoff spot.

Van Aken's goal in the 79th minute answered a Dickinson score in the 76th that knotted things at 1-1. Taking a cross from teammate Sarah Andrade, Van Aken struck a shot into the net that first deflected off a Red Devil defender.

The Fords grabbed the initial lead late in the first half when Elizabeth Levitan headed in a ball that had bounced off Dickinson goalie Kailyn Hartmann's hands following a shot by Michele Buonora.

Early second half action tilted in favor of the home Fords but Dickinson turned the tide and began to build momentum with Haverford goalie Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds keeping her team in front with several saves.

Dickinson finally broke through after a scramble in front of the Haverford goal with Sarah Montminy notching the tying goal from 12 yards out.

It didn't take long, though, for the Fords to steal back the momentum and set up the winning goal by Van Aken.

The victory allowed the Fords to keep pace with 23rd-ranked Swarthmore College as both teams sit third in the league standings with 6-2 conference marks.

Next up on the schedule for the Fords is that same Swarthmore team as the two will step onto the Walton Field grass for an important league game at 4 p.m. next Tuesday afternoon.
