Haverford blanks Gettysburg in third consecutive shutout victory

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Under a steady rain on Saturday afternoon the Haverford College women's soccer team blanked host Gettysburg College, 2-0, in a Centennial Conference match-up.

Goals from Michele Buonora and Katie Van Aken allowed Haverford (6-0-2, 1-0-0) to remain unbeaten in the 2009 season and gave the Fords their first win over the Bullets (4-3, 1-1) since 2004.

Haverford opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Maura Schiefer launched a free kick from the right side into the box where a Gettysburg defender flicked it away with a header. Buonora was able to gather the loose ball, though, and pushed a shot low and to the right of Bullets goalie Allie Rivera to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Clinging to the one goal margin late in the second half Haverford got off close-in shots by Katie Van Aken and Hannah Davis, each saved by Rivera, but the third time was the charm as Van Aken finally found the back of the net with just 11 minutes to go for what would be an insurance goal.

Fords goalie Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds made three saves in the win and pushed her unscored upon streak to 311+ minutes over more than three games.

The Fords next outing will be on Tuesday, September 29, against visiting Muhlenberg College, the team that knocked the Fords out of the 2008 Centennial playoffs with a 2-1 victory in Allentown.
