Women's soccer grounds visiting Owls in Centennial opener for both

HAVERFORD, Pa. – A second straight outpouring of offensive firepower propelled the Haverford College women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over visiting Bryn Mawr College Wednesday afternoon in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.

Haverford (3-1, 1-0 CC) posted 33 shots — 17 on goal — in the win over the Owls (1-4, 0-1 CC) while allowing a total of one, wide, shot from Wednesday's visitors. Saturday at Immaculata the Fords held the Mighty Macs without a shot while registering 28 on the scoresheet.

Michele Buonora kicked off the scoring Wednesday with her first of the season. The senior midfielder worked her way down the middle and launched a shot from five yards out to the right of Bryn Mawr goalie Rebecca Joseph in the game's 16th minute.

Sophie Eiger tallied the second marker for the Fords. In the 39th minute the freshman came down the right side and gained position on her Bryn Mawr defender before taking a sharp angle shot from about eight yards outside of the right post that floated not much higher than the cross bar before dropping under it, and over Joseph, for her first collegiate goal.

Anna Rayne, in the 59th minute, and Sarah Hoffman, in the 86th, also scored their first goals of the season for Haverford and Eiger added a second marker late in the contest.

The Fords ruled the middle third of the field preventing the Owls from successfully making any through-ball attempts, and the back line of Haverford quickly cleared any Bryn Mawr attempts to send the ball over the clogged middle.

Joseph finished with a valiant 12 saves for Bryn Mawr while Fords starter Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds and then Allison Martinez-Davis combined for the shutout between the pipes for Haverford.

The Fords jump out of conference action in their next outing Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they welcome Elizabethtown to Walton Field for a non-league match-up.
