Championship bid ends for women's soccer in semifinal shootout

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit then held No. 12 Johns Hopkins University scoreless through the overtime periods of a 2-2 tie in the Centennial Conference tournament semifinal Saturday afternoon, but the Blue Jays earned the right to advance into Sunday's championship final with a 3-2 edge in penalty kicks.

Hopkins (15-3-1) took a 2-0 lead into the intermission but Haverford (12-5-1) picked up goals from Anna Rayne and Mariah Baker while holding the Blue Jays scoreless during second half action.

Rayne scored early in the 50th minute off a feed from Meg Boyer, then Baker got the equalizer in the 69th minute with an assist from Rayne.

The Fords forced Hopkins goalie Kristen Redsun to make two more saves following Baker's goal but regulation time ended with the score still knotted at 2-2.

The Blue Jays put four shots on goal during the two 10-minute overtime periods but Haverford goalie Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds stopped each attempt forcing the contest into the shootout.

Kara McMahon and Michele Buonora stepped up first for the Fords and knocked home their penalty kick attempts while Hopkins was successful in its second and third tries.

With the shootout locked at two apiece, the fifth player for each team stepped up with Hopkins' Pamela Vranis knocking in the game-winner after Elizabeth Newman's attempt for the Fords was missed.

Following Hopkins' second goal which came at the 36:55 mark of the first half, Herrick-Reynolds held the Blue Jays at bay for the final 83 minutes of regulation and overtime play finishing with 12 saves.

Haverford must now play the waiting game. Selections for at-large bids into the NCAA championship are announced Monday and the Fords hope their strong season and stellar showing against the nationally-ranked Blue Jays propel them into the national tournament.

Johns Hopkins will square off against host and top-seed Dickinson College, 2-1 winners over Ursinus in the day's opening semifinal, at 1 p.m. Sunday in Carlisle.
