BALTIMORE, Md. – The Haverford College women's soccer team pulled even with No. 6 Johns Hopkins University late in Friday night's Centennial Conference match-up, but the host Blue Jays scored with even less time on the clock to escape the upset bid with a 2-1 win over the Fords.
Katie Van Aken's header off a cross from Sophie Eiger beat Blue Jays goalie Kristen Redsun for the equalizing goal with 7:01 remaining in regulation.
Hopkins (9-2, 3-1 CC) had taken a 1-0 lead into the intermission on a goal from Christina Convey with five seconds left in the opening half.
Van Aken's fourth goal of the season evened things at 1-1 late in the game but Erica Suter rescued the home team three minutes later on a goal in the 87th minute.
Though the Blue Jays out shot Haverford (5-4, 2-2 CC) by a 20-1 count, only eight of those 20 shots made it on frame as Fords goalie Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds stopped three in each half to finish with six saves. Redsun earned the win between the pipes for Hopkins despite not registering a save and allowing a goal on the only shot she faced.
Friday's final score was the third consecutive regular season contest with Hopkins that the Fords have fallen by a 2-1 count including an overtime game in 2008.
Haverford will try to get back on the winning track Wednesday afternoon in a league game at Ursinus College.
