Pair of goals from freshmen duo help push women's soccer past Eagles

HAVERFORD, Pa. - A pair of freshmen scored their first collegiate goals Saturday afternoon to help lead the Haverford College women's soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference victory over the University of Mary Washington at Walton Field.

The Fords (7-4) took a one-goal lead over the Eagles (7-4-1) into halftime on a late score from Elizabeth Newman. Teammate Sarah Hoffman sailed a corner kick opportunity to the back post where Newman was able to collect the ball and bury her shot into the lower left corner.

In the 58th minute, Meg Boyer spun around a defender just inside the box and, from the middle, pushed a pass to the left toward Mariah Baker who crossed a shot back toward the right and inside the post beating Mary Washington goalie Tina Brehm.

Early action in the opening half seemed evenly split in each side of the field with both teams making runs deep into their offensive zones. The field began to tilt in the Fords' favor as the half wore on, though, until Newman finally broke the deadlock.

The Fords finished the opening 45 minutes with a 5-4 advantage in shots but none of the Eagles' attempts were on goal while Brehm was forced to make three saves for the visitors.

Haverford out shot Mary Washington 7-3 in the second half getting one shot past the Eagles' net minder who added three more saves to her game total allowing the visitors to remain within striking distance.

Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds didn't have to make her first save for Haverford until the game's 71st minute.

Mary Washington's Erin Reynolds broke free down the middle and collected a through-ball clear of her defender but Herrick-Reynolds raced out to cut down the angle and deflected Reynolds' shot away to her right. The Fords' keeper picked up a second save late in the half to preserve the shut out.

Saturday's meeting between the Fords and Eagles was the first between the two institutions.

Haverford jumps back into action Wednesday afternoon with a trip to Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa., for a 4 p.m non-league game.
