HAVERFORD, Pa. - Katie Van Aken's goal off a feed from Meg Boyer broke open a scoreless game Saturday afternoon and spurred the Haverford College women's soccer team to a 3-0 non-conference win over Rutgers-Camden in the consolation game of the Haverford Kickoff Tournament.

Boyer drove deep to the left of the goal in the 58th minute luring defenders and Rutgers goalkeeper Leighanna Milby toward her then flicked a short pass across the goal mouth to Van Aken who slotted a one-timer inside the right post to give the Fords (1-0-1) the lead over the Scarlet Raptors (1-1-1).

Sarah Hoffman buried a direct kick just under the crossbar 66 seconds later pushing the lead to two. The margin grew to three in the 71st minute when Phoebe Miller centered a pass to Sarah Andrade who had position in front of a defender allowing for an easy tap-in behind Milby who had drifted to her left to take on Miller.

A sluggish first half from the Fords along with a spirited 45 minutes from Rutgers left the game deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the intermission. Haverford accumulated 17 shots in the opening frame but only a few were challenging for Milby who registered nine saves on the ones that made it onto goal.

The Fords attacked Milby consistently in the second half netting scores on three of the seven shots that were on goal.

At the other end of the field, Haverford goalie Robin Chernow enjoyed a much easier day needing to make only two saves in the contest, thanks to solid backline play from the defenders in front of her. The Fords also controlled midfield play most of the game further limiting the burden on Chernow and the defense.

Haverford travels to Purchase, N.Y., for its next outing. The Fords will take on Eastern Connecticut Saturday afternoon in their first game of the Manhattanville (Univ.) Tournament, followed by a match-up against the host school Sunday at Noon.
