Newman earns Centennial weekly honor after women's soccer weekend sweep

LANCASTER, Pa. – After helping lead defensive efforts that pushed the Haverford College women's soccer team to a pair of wins over the weekend, sophomore defender Liz Newman has been named the Centennial Conference women's soccer defensive player of the week as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

Newman and the Fords' defense surrendered a total of five shots by opponents in two weekend victories that kept Haverford unbeaten in 2011 with a 3-0-1 mark.

The only defensive blemish at the Manhattanville (College) Tournament was an own goal in Saturday's 2-1 upset victory over No. 10 Eastern Conn. State during which the Warriors only registered three shots of their own.

In Sunday's match-up against the host school, the Haverford defense allowed the first shot of the game -- off-target and wide of the goal -- then held the Valiants without a shot over the remaining 88 minutes in a 2-0 victory.
