Women's soccer rolls to conference win over Gettysburg

HAVERFORD, Pa. - A quartet of second-half goals led the Haverford College women's soccer team to a solid 5-1 Centennial Conference victory over visiting Gettysburg College Saturday afternoon at Walton Field.

Elizabeth Newman opened the scoring for Haverford (6-0-3, 2-0-1 CC) in the 18th minute with her first of the season, giving the Fords an early lead over Gettysburg (5-4, 3-1).

Anna Rayne lofted a free kick from the right of the Gettysburg goal across the box where teammate Hannah Davis leaped for a header that redirected the ball back to the right. Newman put her header just inside the right post to put the Fords in front, 1-0.

The Bullets owned an advantage in shots, 5-3, and corner kick chances, 7-1, through the opening 45 minutes but still trailed entering halftime. The margin was stuck at one until Haverford's Meg Boyer initiated a string of three more scores to effectively put the game away.

Katie Van Aken, inside the box and to the right of the goal, centered a pass to Boyer who spun around a Gettysburg defender and pounded a left-footed shot into the top right corner of the Bullets' goal in the 66th minute for what would end up being the game-winner.

Newman added her second 16 minutes later, followed by a Davis tally not even two minutes later. Gettysburg finally got on the board a minute after Davis's goal but she added a second score at the 88:37 mark to settle the outcome and give the Fords a much easier victory than in 2010.

In that game last year, the Fords netted the only goal of the game late in the second overtime period to steal a win from the Bullets.

Haverford goalkeeper Robin Chernow registered just one save on the day Saturday, in the game's 15th minute, but twice she thwarted scoring chances before the Bullets could get a shot off.

In the 55th minute, Chernow raced out and stole the ball off the foot of a Bullets player who was bearing down on her in a one-on-one chance. In the 72nd minute she leaped over a Gettysburg player on another scroring chance, snaring the ball before the situation grew more dangerous.

For the game the Fords opened up a 14-8 advantage in shots via their second-half onslaught, though the Bullets finished with a 10-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.

Haverford continues conference play with its next game, a Wednesday visit by Ursinus College with kickoff slated for 4 p.m. at Walton Field.
