Second-half outburst leads Fords past Greyhounds

Second-half outburst leads Fords past Greyhounds

HAVERFORD, Pa. - A three-goal outburst in early second-half action led the Haverford College women's soccer team to a 3-0 non-conference victory over visiting Moravian College Wednesday at Walton Field.

Meg Boyer's goal in the 52nd minute would prove to be the game-winner for Haverford (8-0-4) but Allie Chen's two goals six minutes apart provided the finishing touch as the Fords defeated Moravian (4-8-1) for the second straight year.

A scoreless first half with few scoring chances turned into a flood of opportunities for Haverford in early second-half action. Hannah Davis gained possession deep in the left corner and sent a long pass across the box to Boyer on the right who slotted her shot into the upper right of the goal to break open the game.

Two minutes later, at the 53:23 mark, Chen notched her first of the game, scoring from in close off an assist from Katie Van Aken. After a Davis breakaway and shot bounced off the left post, the Fords regained possession and Chen, from 40 yards out, found the same upper right corner Boyer had scored into for another score, this one coming in the 60th minute.

Haverford owned a slight 3-1 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes but opened up its attack during the second half, getting off 11 shots to just one by the Greyhounds.

Moravian goalkeeper Genevieve Chaleff kept the Haverford lead from growing several times during the game, rushing out to halt Haverford threats before shots could be taken.

In the Fords' defensive end, goalie Robin Chernow finished with one save and, like Chaleff did in her own end, stopped the few other threats the Greyhounds could muster, helping to limit the visitors to just two shots in the game.

Haverford steps back into Centennial Conference action with its next outing as No. 5 Johns Hopkins University visits Walton Field on Saturday for a noontime start.
