Fords unable to ground ranked Blue Jays

HAVERFORD, Pa. - A fast start by visiting and fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins University led the Blue Jays to a 5-1 Centennial Conference victory over host Haverford College in women's soccer action Saturday at Walton Field.

The Fords (8-1-4, 3-1-2 CC) suffered their first defeat of the season with the loss while Hopkins (13-0, 6-0) continued with its unblemished record.

Action in the midfield from the Fords was solid in the early going, they simply weren't able to continue possession past the Blue Jays' back line to test Hopkins goalkeeper Kristen Redsun.

The visitors took advantage of a corner kick opportunity in the seventh minute to open the scoring after mostly even play up until that point. The ball banged around inside the box until Hopkins' Kylie Fuller gained control and snuck a shot inside the left post past diving Haverford goalie Robin Chernow. The Blue Jays were able to score twice more in the opening half to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission.

After Hopkins stretched the lead through the the opening 25 minutes of play in the second half, Larisa Antonisse was able to put the Fords on the board with her third score of the season. Antonisse gained a through ball sent from the foot of Meg Boyer, then blasted a shot under the crossbar from 30 yards out at the 74:00 mark.

Haverford created several more scoring opportunities in the remaining 16 minutes but couldn't solve the defensive blockade into which Hopkins had fallen.

The Fords continue with conference play in their next game, Wednesday at 4 p.m. against visiting Bryn Mawr College.
