Late goal lifts Swarthmore past Fords in regular season finale

HAVERFORD, Pa. – A late goal by visiting Swarthmore College sent the Haverford College women's soccer team to a 2-1 Centennial Conference loss Monday night under the lights at Swan Field, but the Fords will continue their season in the league tournament hosting a first-round game Wednesday afternoon.

Haverford (11-2-4, 6-2-2 CC) rallied with an equalizing goal from Sarah Andrade in the 80th minute to pull even at 1-1 but Swarthmore (12-5, 7-3) scored the eventual game-winner six minutes later to earn the win.

Trailing for much of the game after the Garnet's Alexa Ross headed in a loose ball just 8:35 into the game, Andrade appeared to save the day for the Fords with her third of the season, lashing a shot from 20 yards out that caromed off the right post and then behind Swarthmore goalkeeper Marie Mutryn.

Swarthmore's game-winner came off a shot that hit the cross bar, bounced straight down and was then headed into the back of the net by the Garnet's Emma Sindelar.

Both teams had several scoring chances throughout the tight affair as Mutryn was forced to come up with six saves and Haverford net minder Robin Chernow registered five.

Monday's defeat pushes Swarthmore into third place and ahead of the Fords in the Centennial standings. Haverford, as the fourth seed, will host fifth-seed Franklin & Marshall College in an opening round game of the league playoffs Wednesday, Nov. 2 at Walton Field.

Earlier this season, Haverford defeated the host Diplomats, 2-1, in overtime on Oct. 9 behind a goal from Katie Van Aken.

Swarthmore's women's soccer victory pulls the Garnet to within one of the Fords in the annual Hood Trophy competition between the two schools. Haverford leads the 2011-12 competition 3-2.
