Fords fall in semifinal at #4 Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. - Haverford College played its way into the semifinal round of the Centennial Conference women's soccer tournament, but the playoff run came to a close Saturday at Homewood Field where fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University defeated the Fords 3-0.

Haverford's season closes with a 12-3-4 record, the third straight year the Fords have registered 12 wins. Hopkins (18-0) advances to the conference championship game -- for the eighth straight year -- Sunday against the winner of Saturday's second semifinal between third-seed Gettysburg College and fourth-seeded Swarthmore College.

Saturday's game was evenly played through the opening 15 minutes but Hopkins was able to increase its offensive pressure at that point, picking up a number of corner kick opportunities until finally breaking through with a goal from Pamela Vranis when the Blue Jays maintained possession deep in the box after a failed corner kick chance.

The Fords fell behind by two when a misdirected Haverford header was knocked into the team's own goal in the 28th minute of first-half action. The undefeated Blue Jays added their third goal on a successful penalty kick by Taylor Schulte in the 62nd minute.

Haverford goalkeeper Robin Chernow finished with five saves in the loss while Hopkins' Kristen Redsun earned the shutout after coming up with one save on a shot by the Fords' Katie Van Aken.
