Fords roll to win over Knights in season opener

HAVERFORD, Pa. - In the opening game of the Kickoff Classic on Saturday at Walton Field, host Haverford College rolled to a 3-0 women's soccer victory over the visiting Knights from Arcadia University, moving the Fords into the Classic's championship game Sunday afternoon where they'll square off against the winner of Saturday's second game between Scranton University and William Paterson University.

The non-conference season opener turned near the midway point of the opening period with Allie Chen's goal in the 22nd minute. From 20 yards out the Haverford senior midfielder lofted a shot that settled into the back of the net over leaping goalkeeper Ashley Vaitis from Arcadia, the goal providing an early lead and what would turn out to be the game-winning score.

Chen factored into the second goal of the half, dropping a corner kick from the right corner across the goal to the back post where junior Elizabeth Newman headed a shot behind Vaitis for a two-goal lead that the Fords would carry into the intermission.

Haverford generated more scoring opportunities in the second half but settled for just one more marker, a Sarah Hoffman goal from 18 yards out off a feed from Meg Boyer.

The field seemed tilted downhill for the Fords most of the afternoon as they accumulated 16 shots and six corner kick chances while limiting the Knights to just two and two, respectively. Haverford goalkeeper Robin Chernow needed to make only one save on the afternoon to earn the win. Arcadia's Vaitis took the loss after finishing with eight saves.
