Fords rally past McDaniel, 5-2, to remain perfect at home

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's soccer team remained perfect at home this season as it rallied for a 5-2 victory over visiting McDaniel College Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

Running their record to 8-0 at Walton Field this season, the Fords (11-3-1, 5-2-1 CC) shook off an early 1-0 deficit to send the Green Terror (6-9-1, 1-6-1) to their fourth straight loss.

McDaniel's Hilary Hanus opened the scoring with her first of the season just under seven minutes into the contest but it was all Haverford from that point forward. Tallying 12 of the next 14 shots of the contest, the Fords saw their persistence pay off when sophomore Larisa Antonisse headed home a well-executed corner kick from senior Sarah Hoffman in the 40th minute to tie the score at 1-1.

Junior Meg Boyer followed less than a minute later with her ninth of the season to put the Fords on top as she ripped a shot from 25 yards out on the right side of the field that found the upper left corner of the goal over Green Terror goalie Jan Woolley (6-9-1).

Haverford's offense picked up where it left off in the second half as it exploded for three goals on seven shots in the opening 10 minutes of play. Senior Allie Chen drilled a short pass from sophomore Phoebe Miller at the end line past Woolley for her fourth of the season just over three minutes into second-half action to give the Fords a two-goal cushion.

Converting a feed from senior Kara McMahon, Boyer continued the offensive barrage with her second goal of the contest, and team-leading 10th of the season, at the 52:41 mark.

Boyer also played a part in Haverford's final goal as her seventh shot of the game caught the post and senior Hannah Davis was there to deposit the rebound. Davis' second goal of the season extended the Fords' advantage to 5-1 with 35 minutes remaining on the clock.

Maggie Quinn tallied her fourth goal of the year with just over three minutes left in the game to account for the final score.

Haverford finished with 25 shots overall while holding McDaniel to just seven. The five goals represents the Fords' largest offensive output of the season as they continually put pressure on the Green Terror defense that has surrendered just one goal a game on average this season.

Robin Chernow (11-3-1) registered two saves for her 11th win of the season while Woolley had a busy afternoon with 11 saves.

Katie Bigay, Chen, Davis, Hoffman and McMahon were honored in a pre-game Senior Day ceremony.

Seeking its sixth consecutive Centennial playoff berth, Haverford welcomes Washington College to Walton Field on Oct.23 in the final regular season home contest of the season. The game begins at 4 p.m.
