HOBOKEN, N.J. - Senior Meg Boyer scored her first goal of the season late in the first half to help the Haverford College women's soccer team earn a 1-1 double-overtime tie against Vassar College on the final day of the Stevens Institute of Technology Engineering Cup.

The Fords (0-2-2) dominated play throughout the first half as they fired 11 shots compared to just two from the Brewers (2-0-1). Vassar freshman goalie Stephanie Tapolsky kept Haverford off the scoreboard early with five saves in the first 19-plus minutes of action.

Senior Elizabeth Newman almost broke the scoreless tie in the 21st minute but her shot found the crossbar. Two minutes later Chloe Wheeler, the offensive MVP of the tournament, converted a one touch from Sheeva Seyfi as she put the ball past Fords goalie Robin Chernow (0-2-2) from 15 yards out to give her squad the lead.

Persistence paid off for Haverford almost 12 minutes later when Boyer notched her first of the year off a cross from Mariah Baker. Boyer's offering from 25 yards out found the top right corner of the goal.

The hard-fought battle continued in the second half with Haverford registering six additional shots and Tapolsky (0-0-1) coming up with three more tough saves.

Both squads had chances to end the game in the overtime periods. Chernow came up with a save in each of the extra sessions to preserve the tie. Vassar has beaten host Stevens 2-1 in double overtime on the initial day of tournament action.

The Fords finished the game with a 20-9 advantage in shots.

Due to the point-system format of the Engineering Cup, the contest moved to penalty kicks with Vassar coming out on top, 4-3, and earning four points in the tournament standings. Newman, Dominique Caggiano and Kenna Garrison converted penalty kicks for the Fords.

The final tournament standings saw Vassar and Stevens share the tournament title.

Haverford returns to action on Sep. 14 when it welcomes Dickinson College to Walton Field for a Centennial Conference game at 1 p.m.
