Women's Soccer Tops Moravian, 2-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team finished non-conference play with an exclamation point as the Fords topped Moravian, 2-0, on Wednesday evening. With the victory, the Fords wrap up their first unbeaten and untied non-conference portion of the schedule in program history. The Fords also had unbeaten non-conference seasons in 2009 and 2011, but came away with draws during two of those out of conference matches.

The Fords (7-0-1) controlled the action and ended up with a 16-2 advantage on shots for the match against the visiting Greyhounds (2-5-1). Despite the relentless attack from Haverford, the Fords were unable to fully crack the Moravian defense until the 64th minute of play when reigning Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week Ali Lopez lit up the scoreboard for the eventual game-winning goal. Anna Dekle followed that initial score up with a goal of her own in the 82nd minute.

Haverford owned a 9-1 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes of play. However, four saves by Greyhounds' goalie Jacqueline Zalis kept the game scoreless at the break. The Greyhounds lone shot in the opening half traveled high of the net with time winding down on the first 45 minutes.

Lopez finally beat the Moravian defense just 18 minutes into the second half. The junior terminated a brief Greyhounds' possession and was able to find enough open space in the defense to put a shot just over the outstretched arms of the keeper and under the crossbar from about 30 yards out. Lopez now has a team-leading five goals on the season. She has scored in four straight matches and five of the last six overall.

Coming on as a sub for Lopez in the 67th minute, Dekle insured that the Fords would not lose their offensive firepower. Her goal came with just over eight minutes to play as she was able finish a rebound that came off of a shot from Jo Haller. Dekle's  goal was her third of the season. Haller was credited with her third assist of the season on the play.

Dekle and Lopez each took four shots on the night to lead the Fords' offense. Maryanna SoleckiRaina Fitzpatrick and Haller each had a pair of shots for the evening. In goal, Kathy Prescott went untested as both Moravian shots were off target. Prescott finished with her second straight shutout and fourth clean sheet overall for the season.

Women's soccer will now fully turn its attention to Centennial Conference play following the close of non-conference action for the regular season. The Fords, who tied with Dickinson in their only conference action to date, will travel to Gettysburg this weekend. That match is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
