Women's Soccer Tops Bryn Mawr, 3-0

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team recorded its 10th victory of the season Wednesday afternoon with a 3-0 shutout against Bryn Mawr. The Fords (10-3-1, 3-3-1 CC) have now won 10 matches in six of the past seven years under head coach Jamie Schneck. Her predecessor and current Director of Athletics, Wendy Smith '87, holds the record for most 10-win seasons with seven during her tenure as head coach.

The Fords controlled the match throughout with a 22-5 advantage in shots. Jo Haller played the central role for the offense on Wednesday as she had a hand in each Haverford goal. Haller assisted on the game-winning goal, which was freshman Katie Safter's first of her career. The senior captain then finished the two second half goals to cap the win. Skyler Ellenburg assisted on the first of those second half efforts. Freshman Ali Weiner secured her first career shutout in goal with a pair of saves to anchor the team's defensive efforts.

Haverford did not have to wait long to get the jump on the host Owls. With just 8:48 gone by in the match, Bryn Mawr was called for a foul outside of the box. Haller took the set piece and found Safter, who headed home the game's first goal. Haller's assist tied her for the team lead with five on the season.

The visiting Fords kept the offensive pressure up, searching for a second goal before the break but were denied due to six saves in the opening 45 minutes from Owls' keeper Aviva Kosansky. Haverford ended the half with a 13-2 edge in shots.

However, the Fords did not have to wait much into the second half for their second goal of the game as Haller and Ellenburg connected just 1:17 into the final 45 minutes. Ellenburg's assist tied her with Haller for the team lead with five assists on the year.

Just 7:16 after notching her first goal of the match, Haller was back on the offensive attack in the 54th minute of play. For her second goal of the game, and ninth goal overall this season, the senior took on her defender by herself and created enough room to beat the keeper. Haller's five point effort was her second such game of the season as she also had two goals and an assist during Haverford's 6-0 win against Cabrini to start the 2015 campaign.

The 3-0 advantage was more than enough for the Haverford defense as Weiner was called on to make a save in each half, improving her record to 2-1 on the season. Haverford's 22 shots were split among nine different players Wednesday. Haller took the most attempts, finishing the match with six shots. Six other players had multiple attempts at goal on the afternoon.

Women's soccer will now takes its final road trip of the regular season this weekend with a critical match at McDaniel. The Fords, winners in three of their last four overall to put themselves back in the playoff hunt, are set to get underway with the first-place Green Terror at 3:30 p.m.
