Women's Soccer Takes Down Gettysburg, 1-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – In what is becoming a very familiar story line, the Haverford College women's soccer team used a staunch defensive effort to continue its eight-game unbeaten streak. The Fords (7-1-1, 2-0 CC) remained unbeaten in the early part of the conference slate with a 1-0 shutout win against Gettysburg (6-3, 2-1 CC) on Saturday.

Skyler Ellenburg provided all the offense Haverford needed during the eighth minute of the battle between the previously unbeaten Centennial Conference foes. Ellenburg's goal was the second of her season and came off an assist from Leanne Ludwick who dropped back a pass to leave a shot from the top of the 18. Kathy Prescott recorded her sixth shutout of the season and the team's seventh during this eight-game unbeaten streak.

Scoring chances were at a premium as Haverford finished the game with a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Fords applied the pressure early by hitting the crossbar just 3:33 into the game before Ludwick saw her first shot of the afternoon saved in the fifth minute. Just 8:22 into the game, it was the third chance that proved to be the ultimate charm as Ellenburg beat the Bullets defense for the 1-0 lead.

Haverford's next offensive opportunity came in the 21st minute when Ellenburg appeared poised for her second goal of the afternoon but saw her effort hit off the crossbar. Prescott was called on twice in the opening half as she recorded saves in the 33rd and 44th minutes.

Prescott's final save of the afternoon came with under eight minutes remaining in regulation. Gettysburg also earned a pair of corner kick chances in the final seven minutes that were both successfully defended by Haverford.

Women's soccer will next travel to Ursinus on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. start. The Fords return to Walton Field next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Franklin & Marshall.
