Rainey competes at nationals

DELAWARE, Ohio - Haverford College senior Hope Rainey competed in the preliminaries of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2014 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University on Thursday.

Rainey, a two-time first-team All-Centennial Conference honoree in the steeplechase, got off to a fast start in the first heat of the preliminaries before having to withdraw due to injury.

It was a memorable season overall for Rainey as she became just the second repeat winner in the women's steeplechase in the history of the conference. The dominating performance (10 minutes, 56.43 seconds) saw the senior take over 12 seconds off her previous personal-best time while crossing the line over 20 seconds faster than the next closest competitor.

Rainey proceeded to establish a new program record (10:48.21) in the steeplechase at Swarthmore College's Final Qualifier Meet on May 12. The record-breaking performance moved Rainey into ninth on the national qualifier list and she went on to participate in the steeplechase at the national meet as the 10th seed in the field of 22 athletes.
