Women's Track & Field Competes at West Chester Invitational

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Haverford College women's track & field team competed at the West Chester Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The Fords had multiple top 10 finishes throughout the meet. It was also a pioneering day as Emily Anderson became the first person in program history to compete in the hammer throw.

As Haverford's first entrant in hammer, Anderson placed 12th overall with a distance of 86 feet, 10 inches (26.46m) to set the first school record in the event. She also added a seventh place finish in the discus with a throw of 109 feet (33.22 meters) and an eighth place finish in the shot put with a toss of 9.58 meters. Haverford has been able to practice hammer with the addition of the throwing facility as part of the track renovations that were completed over the summer.

Rounding out the field events were a pair of top five triple jump performances. Elizabeth Reikowski finished as the runner-up in the event with a mark of 10.47 meters. Grace Mathis finished fifth overall with her best leap coming at a distance of 9.94 meters.

On the track, Haverford had four top seven finishes in the 1500 meter run. Sophie Drew highlighted that group as she placed third overall with a time of 5:04.17. Sarah Wade also registered a top five finish with a mark of 5:09.79. Julia Smith and Alison Love filled the sixth and seventh place slots, while Marie Vastola was 13th in the event.

Haverford also entered four other events on the weekend. Caroline Henry was the top finisher for the Fords in the 800 meters as she placed eighth overall with a time of 2:30.52. Kerry Quigley was Haverford's top finisher in the 100 meter dash as she crossed the line in 14.19 seconds. Tess Oberholtzer was ninth in the 100 meter hurdles to lead Haverford with a time of 18.66 seconds. The Fords also entered a relay team of Oberholtzer, Quigley, Sydney West, and Yue Xiang. That relay team was fifth with a time of 4:22.93.

The women's outdoor track & field team will return to action next Saturday during the Chester Challenge which is being hosted by Widener. That meet is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m.
