Women's cross country finishes 4th at regionals

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Four members of the Haverford College women's cross country team earned all-region honors Saturday as the Fords placed fourth at the Division III Mideast Regional at Lehigh University.

Sophomore Nora Weathers was the first Haverford runner to cross the line as she placed ninth in 21 minutes, 44 seconds. Weather's high finish secured her a spot in the D-III national championship race next weekend. Also a sophomore, Kelsey Patrick from Lebanon Valley College claimed the individual title in 21:00.

Junior Kelley Riffenburgh was the Fords' second scorer in 21st place (22:04), followed closely by three of her teammates. Riffenburgh's classmate Charlotte Lellman (26th, 22:12), senior Emily Scott (30th, 22:14) and sophomore Maggie Heffernan (39th, 22:34) finished the six-kilometer course within 22 seconds of each other.

Weathers, Riffenburgh, Lellman and Scott merited all-region honors for their top-35 finish in the field of over 350 runners. It is the third consecutive year Scott has earned the all-region distinction while Weathers has garnered All-Mideast honors in each year of her career.

Defending national champion Johns Hopkins University captured the team title with 26 points while Dickinson College's total of 94 points was good for second as both squads claimed automatic tickets to next Saturday's national meet. Haverford accumulated 125 points to finish right behind Marywood College (118 points) while Elizabethtown College (155 points) rounded out the top five.

The Fords will have to wait until the at-large bids are handed out on Sunday afternoon to see if they will join Weathers on Nov. 23  in Hanover, Indiana.
