Haverford at the National Championships: Men | Women

HAVERFORD, Pa. -  The Haverford College men's and women's cross country teams are prepared to compete in the NCAA Division III Championships, which are on deck for Saturday, November 20 in Louisville, Kentucky. For the second straight competitive season, the meet will be held at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park, with Spalding University of the SLIAC handling hosting duties yet again. The men's 8K race is slated for an 11 a.m. start, followed by the women's 6K race at 12 p.m. ET.

NEED TO KNOW
NCAA Championship racing returns to the Bluegrass State after last season's cancellation as 32 teams will descend on Louisville for each championship. Haverford is no stranger to the national stage, with 28 consecutive appearances (38 total) on the men's side, including seven podium finishes and the 2010 national championship. The women's squad will be making its 18th appearance at the national championship meet, returning for the first time since 2017 after a string of eight appearances in six seasons from 2009-2017. Haverford's best finish was in its first appearance, taking a 10th-place showing in 1993.

METRO CHAMPS!
Men's and Women's Cross Country each earned the 2021 NCAA Metro Region Championship last Saturday in Logan Township, N.J., with the men winning a regional title for the 25th time, and the women earning the crown for the first time. Haverford will be represented at nationals by both the men's and women's programs for the first time since the 2017 national championship at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois.

WOMEN'S ALL-REGION HONORS
Women's cross country was well represented in the USTFCCCA All-Region Awards, with Head Coach Fran Rizzo taking home Metro Region Coach of the Year Honors while senior Izzy Miller was named the Metro Region Athlete of the Year. Rizzo earns Region Coach of the Year honors for the first time. He previously has been named the Centennial Conference Coach of the Year on three occasions, most recently following the 2013 season.

Miller picked up the Athlete of the Year honor, becoming Haverford's first individual regional champ since the 1996 season when Meredith Unger accomplished that feat. In total, Miller is Haverford's sixth individual champion in a regional meet, and the first to top the field in a year where the Fords were a team champion.

With finishes in the top 35 at the Rowan-hosted Metro Regional Championships, Miller, Angie Petrichenko, and Griffin Kaulbach all earned All-Region designation by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

MEN'S ALL-REGION HONORS
Haverford Men's Cross Country head coach Tom Donnelly was named the Metro Region Coach of the Year, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Tuesday. The award is the 14th overall Regional Coach of the Year award for Donnelly, who has captured 13th of those titles in the Mideast Region before the Fords joined the newly-minted Metro Region this season. Donnelly last took home a Regional Coach of the Year award in 2017.

Ryan Kredell finished second while Max Brelig (fourth) and Peter Buckley (11th) were ahead of Amos Karlsen (11th), Peter LaRochelle (18th), Nico Tripeny (25th), and Miles Colescott (26th) in the race. Saturday was the first time since 2017 that Haverford has placed all seven entrants in an All-Region position, and the first time the squad has accomplished that feat without the individual region champion on the roster since 2012.

POLL UPDATE
In the latest USTFCCCA Division III National Coaches Poll, released following the NCAA Regional Championships, the men's squad ranks 20th in the nation, up one spot, while the women's squad enters the national meet as the nation's 28th-ranked squad.
