Sappenfield earns All-Regional Honors, Women’s Cross Country Finishes 11th at Metro Champs

LOGAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. - The Haverford College Women's Cross Country team finished 11th at the 2023 NCAA Division III Metro Region Championship at DREAM Park on Saturday afternoon. The event was hosted by Rowan University. 

Haverford, who finished one place better than last season, collected 293 total points and had all runners place in the top-100, on a gorgeous November day.  

Newly-crowned Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year Alice Sappenfield had a fantastic Metro Regional Championship debut, as she earned a new personal best in the 6k with a blazing time of 23:27.6. Her 33rd-place finish garnered All-Regional honors in her first season with the Fords.

Savannah Shaw joined in on the PR party, accumulating a new season best in the 6k as well. Shaw's new season record of 24:24.5 landed her in 58th place. Junior captain Dominique Monroy crushed her previous personal best 6k time of 24:52.8, completing the 6k trek in 24:25.0. The new best for Monroy was good for 59th place, just behind Shaw. 

Coming in fourth for the Fords was Julianna Watson, who was able to scoot up 15 spots to finish 72nd, after rounding the one mile mark in 87th. The Brookline, Mass. product crossed the finish line with a time of 24:49.6. 

A few places behind the Watson, were a duo of Haverford runners who crossed the finish line in tandem. Both Krysta Nichols (76th place, 24:58.9) and Jessie Hausman (77th place, 24:58.9) not only finished the race together, but also earned new personal bests in the 6k competition. 

Carly Priest rounded out the Scarlet and Black on the day, achieving a new personal best by a whopping 36.5 seconds. The Columbus, Ohio native ended the race with a time of 25:22.2, grabbing 86th place.

TCNJ, the number one ranked team in the Metro, took home the regional crown. Stockton finished as the runner up, with Widener rounding out the top-three in third place. 

Dale Leonard of Ramapo claimed the individual Metro Region title, with Widener's Gabriella Nye earning second, and Stockton's Kayla Kass taking third-place.

The Metro Regional Championship has concluded the 2023 season for the women's cross country team. All eyes are now set on the start of the 2023-24 Indoor Track & Field season, as the new campaign kicks-off with the Ursinus Bow Tie Invitational on December 8, in Collegeville, Pa. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
