Fords edged by Wellesley in defensive battle

WELLESLEY, Mass. - The Haverford College women's soccer team fell 1-0 to host Wellesley College in the opening round of the Wellesley Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Fords (2-1), winners of the 2012 Haverford Kickoff Classic last weekend, saw their season-opening two-game win streak come to an end at the hands of the Blue (1-2-1).

Chelsea-Ann Patry scored the lone goal of the contest midway through the first half to give Wellesley the 1-0 lead at intermission.

Haverford dug deep and attacked the Blue's defense with three shots on the goal in the final five minutes but Wellesley goalie Kat Goldsmith stood tall.

Suffering the loss in goal, the Fords' Robin Chernow (2-1) made two saves. Starting goalie Claire Cerda (1-1-1) earned the win for the Blue.

Haverford takes on host Babson College Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. on the second day of the two-site Wellesley Invitational.
