WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Haverford College women's soccer team (10-4-1, 4-2-1 CC), suffered just its second Centennial Conference defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon. The Fords dropped the matinee contest by a score of 2-0 to McDaniel (9-2-3, 5-0-2 CC), a team receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, at the Green Terror Soccer Complex.
A very quiet opening half picked up in the 38th minute, as the Green Terror were awarded a corner kick. Following a short corner insert, a cross from the flank was deflected towards the top of the box. A laser of a shot by Sarah Hurley was parried away by Scarlet and Black goalkeeper Lily Buyer, however, Lauren Green was right there on the rebound, hammering a shot home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Throughout the second half, both teams continued to test each other, with multiple physical challenges for both teams. It wasn't until the 66th minute that the second dangerous chance of the game occurred for McDaniel. Following a low free kick that was sent into the box, Jessica Weinholdt chipped a shot up and over Buyer. The ball started bending in towards the crossbar, but luckily for the visitors, the ball ricocheted off the top of the bar and safely went out of play.
With just over 10 minutes to go, the Green Terror found an insurance goal, after Gabriella Piantadosi put one into the back of the net. Following a free kick into the 18', the ball pinballed around the box until Alexis Keller-Posen knocked the ball towards the back post. The ball grazed off of Piantadosi and rolled into the net, as McDaniel took a crucial 2-0 lead.
The Green Terror's stifling defense was able to fend off the Fords for the remainder of the second half, as McDaniel claimed a 2-0 victory over the Scarlet and Black. The Green Terror held a 12-4 advantage over the Fords in shots, but were able to steer only three of those shots on net.
Women's soccer will return home following the two-game road trip, as the next contest for the program will be Saturday, October 26, as the Fords will welcome the eighth-ranked Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins to historic Walton Field for another CC showdown. Prior to the 12 p.m. kickoff, there will be a pregame ceremony honoring the seniors of the Haverford women's soccer team.
