Women's Soccer Sinks Washington College, 3-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team got three goals from three different players on Thursday evening to defeat Washington College on Walton Field. Those three goals were also set up by three different players to round out the team's effort.

The Fords (11-4-1, 4-4-1 CC) outshot the visiting Shorewomen (3-10-2, 0-8-1 CC) by a 20-1 margin for the convincing victory. It was also a fitting start to the final week in the college careers of seniors Jo Haller and Lexi Williams as both scored in the victory. Haller's goal was her team-leading 10th of the season, while Williams tallied her first career goal in the win. Katie Safter scored her second goal of the season to add to the Haverford offense.

Haverford's early attacking efforts were turned away with four first half saves from Washington's Melissa Barry. The hosts finally broke through on their fifth shot of the opening half as Haller took a pass from Skyler Ellenburg and beat the goalie during the 34th minute of play. Ellenburg's assist tied her with Haller for the team lead with six helpers. The Fords also created a great chance to score in the final minute of the half, but a shot from Anna Dekle off a corner kick hit the post to leave the score 1-0 at the break.

Taking the offensive pressure to another level during the final 45 minutes, Haverford recorded 14 shots during the second half and did not concede a single offensive chance to the Shorewomen. Those efforts were rewarded in the 54th minute when Safter finished a goal off an ensuing scramble from a corner kick. In the packed box, Abby Letts played the ball to Safter for her first assist of the season. The Fords finished the match with an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.

Persistence from Williams was the key in Haverford's last goal of the evening. The senior led the team with five shots during the match. She scored on the fourth of those attempts after watching two get saved and another travel high. Williams found the back of the net in the 78th minute on a shot from the top of the 18. Krista Federici was credited with her first assist of the year on the play.

Ali Weiner notched her second shutout of the season as Washington College's only shot attempt of the evening traveled wide of the net in the 19th minute of play. She also combined with Kathy Prescott to record a pair of team shutouts earlier in the season. Haverford has now held the opposition scoreless in eight matches this season as Weiner improved to 3-2 as the starting goalie.

Women's soccer will wrap up the 2015 season this Saturday against rival Swarthmore. Prior to the game, the team will honor both Haller and Williams as a part of the Senior Day Festivities. The rivalry matchup with a Hood Trophy point on the line is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
