Women's Soccer Falls at No. 4 Johns Hopkins, 3-0

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Haverford College women's soccer team (3-2-3, 0-1-2 CC) was defeated by host No. 4 Johns Hopkins (6-0-2, 3-0-0 CC) on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field, falling by a 3-0 final to the Blue Jays.

Haverford goalkeeper Claire Cywes was immediately tested out of the gates by a strong Blue Jays attack, but did well to deal with those early challenges, making a save in the second minute before the Haverford backline blocked a few early salvos from danger in the first 10 minutes of play. With both teams still feeling each other out and getting a sense for gameplans in those opening moments, it was the Blue Jays eventually breaking through in the 16th minute with Rebecca Rosen finding the back of the net off assists from Sophia Stone and Megha Salvi.

Cywes made a pair of saves later in the half, stopping a shot from Rachel Jackson in the 24th minute and also turning away Rosen in the 43rd minute. Ella Manning added Haverford's first shot of the game in the 41st minute, missing wide.

After Cywes was called into action to make a pair of saves in the opening moments of the second half, Johns Hopkins doubled its advantage in the 55th minute, as Jackson found her way onto the scoresheet with a goal that came off an assist from Rosen as the forward line proved to be vital for the hosts. Cywes turned away Kacie Filian in the 67th minute, and denied Ella Macko in the 80th minute, keeping the Fords within striking distance. Unfortunately for the visitors, it was hard to break through against a swarming JHU defense that helped the Blue Jays retain much of the time of possession.

After Johns Hopkins added its third tally of the contest, with Rosen adding her second of the afternoon, Celia Page and Phoebe Garfield had chances in the 87th and 90th minutes, respectively. In total, Johns Hopkins held a 21-3 edge in shots and a 13-1 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon. Cywes finished with eight saves, a career high for the senior.

The Fords will now take a quick excursion to non-conference action, doing battle with Immaculata on Tuesday afternoon on Walton Field. The matchup with the Mighty Macs will begin at 4 p.m. and will be the first athletic event as part of Haverford Athletics' Pride Week. Conference play continues on Saturday, October 1 at Muhlenberg under the lights (7 p.m.).
