HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's soccer team (1-0) downed the Knights of Arcadia (0-1), prevailing 2-0 on Friday afternoon. Walton Field was the host of the season opening match, a contest that saw the Fords rip 30 shots throughout the game.
The first of many shots on goal throughout the contest occurred in just the fourth minute, as Haverford's Grace Haskell launched an attempt from behind the box, testing Arcadia goalkeeper Abby Fuchs.
The next 30 minutes saw the Scarlet and Black pepper the net, ripping nine shots on the Knights, including a Keira Prince shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.
However it was the 11th shot of the match for the Fords that found the back of the net, courtesy of Olivia Daulerio. In the 35th minute, the junior jumped on top of a goal kick regaining possession for the Fords, D'Aulerio turned on the jets and blazed past the Arcadia defense. The midfielder finessed a shot placed towards the far post that was deflected in by the Knights' defense, to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Haverford continued the relentless offensive pressure to wind down the first half, as the Fords unleashed four more shots, with shots on frame coming from Phoebe Garfield and Carly Rusak.
The Scarlet and Black picked up right where they left off in the second, continuing their offensive prowess by firing off three shots in the first five minutes, including a Sarah Klink shot that smacked off the crossbar.
Five more shots in the next 15 minutes steered on target kept the Fords in the driver's seat, as a second D'Aulerio goal in the 68th minute rewarded Haverford for their potent offensive attack. After making her way into the box, a slotted shot past a diving Fuchs extended the Scarlet and Black lead to 2-0.
However, not to be outdone, Arcadia got on the scoresheet just a minute later in the 69th, as Caroline Weirich capitalized on a Haverford turnover in the defensive third. Weirich picked the ball up in the top corner of the box and unleashed a right-footed wonder strike curling past Lily Buyer, to trim the Fords' lead to 2-1.
Despite just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest, the Fords were able to fend off the Knights' ambitious comeback by carrying on a majority of the possession for the remainder of the match to hang on to a 2-1 victory.
With the opener in hand, Haverford continues a two game homestand on Sunday, September 1, as the River Hawks of Susquehanna challenge the Fords on Walton Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
