HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College women's soccer team (2-0) wrapped up its opening weekend with a second consecutive victory, defeating Susquehanna (0-2) by a score of 2-0 on Walton Field Sunday afternoon.
The Fords took control from the start, maintaining a 17-9 advantage in shots and earning seven corner kicks compared to three for the River Hawks. Haverford created early opportunities within the first 10 minutes, including a Sarah Klink header that sailed just over the crossbar off a corner kick in the ninth minute.
Phoebe Garfield opened the scoring moments later in the 12th minute. Classmate Grace Haskell corralled the ball down the left flank and delivered a one-time pass to Garfield, who took a stride and finished at the far post for her first goal of the season.
Haverford continued to press in the first half, with Haskell shooting on target in the 17th minute and Olivia Daulerio testing the keeper twice in the following minutes. Daulerio rattled the crossbar in the 33rd minute and had another shot saved in the 35th.
Susquehanna had a chance in the 41st minute when Olivia St. Amand sent a ball into the box. Both Ava Billmeyer and Kalie Quaglia got touches on it, but the Haverford defense managed to clear the danger.
The Fords started the second half as the aggressors, with Garfield and Haskell both missing high, and Keira Prince's shot being saved by Katie Henchy. In the 58th minute, Haverford doubled its lead when Garfield sent a perfectly placed centering pass to Haskell, who tapped in her first goal of the season. Just over a minute later, the Fords struck again. Haskell delivered a corner that eventually found Sophia Miranda, who lofted a powerful right off the near post. Madeline Dosen was perfectly positioned to control the rebound and finish confidently, securing the third goal of the afternoon and the first of her career.
Haverford pushed for a fourth, with Lauren Anderson missing just over the bar in the 69th minute. Susquehanna had some late chances, but Haverford goalkeeper Lily Buyer was called into action to deny shots from Nicole Freiler and Amelia Klopp, and a Gigi Duncan header in the 84th minute.
Buyer recorded the first clean sheet of the season with five saves in her first career complete game shutout.
The Fords will look to continue their strong start on Saturday, September 7, when they head to Washington, D.C., to face Catholic University. The match is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. in the shadows of the nation's capitol.
